June Arunga

Speaker, 2006

Originally from Kenya, 25-year-old June Arunga recently graduated from Buckinghamshire Law School in England, has done 2 documentaries for the BBC, and is now in the US putting together her feature film company, for which she has a proposal for the first three films.

A believer that Africa will never change as long as foreign aid keeps propping up the corrupt rulers and the populace never gets the habit of fiscal responsibility, Arunga says people in Kenya would volunteer to work in sweatshops for free, just to have access to clean running water and electricity without carrying firewood. "I wish we would have more sweatshops, quote unquote, in my country," Arunga . . . Most economists agree that "sweatshops" are what allowed people in now-thriving places like South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore to work their way out of poverty. . ."
