Marty Zupan

Marty Zupan is president of the Institute for Humane Studies and the former editor of Reason magazine.
The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) is a nonprofit organization that educates college students about the principles of free markets and individual liberty and helps freedom-minded students achieve opinion-leading careers as professors, policy experts, journalists, and filmmakers. Find out more about IHS programs for college students at www.theIHS.org.
Prior to joining IHS in 1989 as a vice president, Marty was editor-in-chief of Reason, the monthly magazine of "Free Minds and Free Markets." She has been published in several academic journals as well as the New York Times Book Review and the op-ed pages of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Orange County Register, and other newspapers. Topic: Marty will draw on her 16 years of experience at IHS and talk about college students and where their heads are—and what can be done about it. We live in the most prosperous time and place in the history of mankind, but the vast majority of students have no idea where this prosperity comes from, and they doubt that it's legitimate. "Capitalism Kills"—seen on a globalization protestor's banner—is a common attitude on campus. Is there any hope for reversing this state of mind? Marty will talk about the communication tools she and the IHS team have found effective—tools we can all use with people who are skeptical that individual liberty and free markets offer the best hope for humans living together in peace and prosperity.
