Rigoberto Stewart

Dr. Rigoberto Stewart is a native of Limón Province, Costa Rica.
Education Upon completing his primary and secondary education in Siquirres, Limón, Dr. Stewart attended the Panamerican School of Agriculture in Honduras, receiving a degree in Agriculture in 1973. Subsequently he undertook advanced studies in the United States, receiving his bachelor of science degree in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida in 1978, his masters in Agricultural Economics from Louisiana State University in 1980, and his doctorate in Economics from North Carolina State University in 1984. During 1985-1986 he was a post-doctoral fellow in the Economics Program at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), in Mexico.
Professional Experience Since 1984 he has consulted internationally for organizations such as the World Bank, BID and USAID, as well as governments, in Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru Jamaica and Ghana. He has taught at the University of Costa Rica and the Latin American University of Science and Technology, in San José. In 1995, Dr. Stewart founded and in 1999 became Executive Director of the Institute for Liberty and Policy Analysis (INLAP in Spanish), a think tank designed to promote individual liberty and government policies that facilitate individual and economic development.
Publications Dr. Stewart is a well known author. He has published many books, articles and monographs, especially in his chosen field of economics, forestry policy and economic development in Latin America. Among his books are The magic and mystery of trade (2005), The Hidden Truths of Protectionism (2000), and Limón REAL, a Free and Autonomous Region (1999). He also edited a volume with Vince Miller, in Spanish, entitled Freedom in our Time: A collection of Libertarian Essays, and is currently writing The Mystery of Trade.
He is a frequent contributor to the editorial page of La Nación, the most important newspaper of Costa Rica; and to other newspapers and magazines in Costa Rica. His articles are published throughout Latin America by the Inter-American Economic Press Agency (AIPE).
Political Activities Dr. Stewart is a co-founder of the Libertarian Party, which he served for two years as Secretary General. Currently he has no ties with any political party.
